Q: Why do some animals go into foster care?
A: Any animal that needs some special care will benefit with placement in a foster home where they can receive more one-on-one care to help them thrive. They may have been sick, injured, not socialized or emotionally distressed, and the shelter environment makes it hard for them to overcome.
We always need fosters for puppies. In addition, healthy animals can be placed in foster care when there is limited space at The Center.
Q: What do I need to be a foster parent?
A: The ability to spend one-on-one time with the animal, a fenced space that will allow them the chance to run free and lots of love and hugs. In some cases, basic training including house breaking is needed, since it is often the first time the animal has lived inside a house. The Humane Society will cover all medical expenses and provide ongoing support for fosters.
Q: How long will I need to foster?
A: It can be from a week to a month or sometimes longer—while the pet is waiting to be adopted into a “forever home”.
Q: What if I want to keep the pet?
A: The Humane Society offers a foster-to-adopt program where the foster parent is welcomed to adopt the pet.
Q: What if I can no longer keep a foster?
A: We will take the pet back to The Center or find it another foster home.
Q: What if I find someone to adopt the animal?
A: This would be great—the prospective adoptee would need to contact The Center to go through our regular adoption process.
ADOPTION PROCESS:
- To adopt an animal requires a visit to The Center and filling out an application.
- Center personnel or Volunteers conduct a visit to the individual’s home to ensure they have adequate space (depending on size of animal) and a fenced-in area to house the dog or cat. This is to prevent anyone from ever tying up a dog outside and to ensure the dog will not be permitted to wander from the home. The house must also have shade and be clean.
- Once the individual has been approved to adopt they can pick up their new pet which has been bathed, groomed, vaccinated, sterilized and leaves with a certificate of health.
- The cost to adopt is $1,000 pesos for dogs and $500 pesos for cats to cover the surgery and vaccinations costs.
