Maggie's play by Play account of a trip up North...

We took Toby out to the mountains on Sunday as our nephew was with us and had never seen them.  Toby started out quite restless in the car once he realized that we weren't going to the dog park but did settle down.  Don't think he really ever fell asleep but did lie down.  He barks quite a bit if he sees another dog but I am trying to get that under control as it can give you a bit of a start if he spots a dog before you do!He is such a great dog and we just love him - he was so worth the wait!

TOBY's HISTORY - rescued and taken to shelter. Became very sick with erlichea, spent time in the vets office before coming to my house. Needed lots of med but pulled thru with flying colours. When he left to go to the family in Calgary, he was back to being the most beautiful golden retriever! He is very lucky to have found such a great family!

Hello Maggie and Mirella: Greetings from tofino on vancouver island!
Queenie and i are doing very well and are just so happy with the dog you sent us up from cabo...

Galleta is really comfortable and relaxed with us and matches our activity level perfectly. we're so pleased to welcome her as a part of our family. she doesn't seem to mind living with us on a small 29 foot sailboat, especially as we're walking her about 1 1/2 hours every day.

She's got come, sit, stay, shake-a-paw, go-to-your-bunk, and dance. (she's really great at balancing... even on her hind legs, which is very handy since she has to jump on and off our boat and on the docks, etc.) we're working with "off the road" on walks and she's even getting into retrieving Very Small Sticks. she's really a dainty and stylish young lady which matches queenie and she seems to find the water a bit cold since she hasn't gone swimming yet.

Once the weather warms up a bit more (still pretty cold and rainy here) i think she may come for a dip especially once we dive in...

“Tupper” was found in a garbage can by Ana Cecilia, daughter of our shelter caretaker, Modesta.

The helpless, tiny puppy would have died if not rescued by Ana.

Ana and her sister Alejandra cared for the terrier mix puppy at their home until she was fully recovered.

As the picture shows, Pawsitive Match in Alberta, Canada found her a wonderful forever home.

Ceci goes home to Canada!

The new family drove 7 hours from Saskatoon to meet me at my flight at  1 AM and then drove turned around and drove  home again.  Thank you Pawsitive Match Rescue  from Calgary, AB
Ceci (our Tikka) is liking her new home and surroundings. The trip home went very smooth. She slept like a baby for most of the way.
She is defiantly a curious dog and likes to sniff things out and yes, she is very smart. We start obedience classes for her this weekend. She does get a little timid around other dogs and certain people and will growl. But some reassurance and a quick "no" seems to snap her out of it. I believe she is going to be a very good loving and playful dog in the years to come.

ABANDONED ON THE BEACH, BISCUIT MAKES
A LOVE CONNECTION!

The Whitney family came to Cabo for a vacation in April.  They took a tour of the area that ended on a remote beach near Todos Santos for a barbeque.  Upon arriving at the beach a cute dog came running up to greet the visitors.  Lori and her daughter Makenna love dogs so were thrilled to have the friendly dog’s company at the event.  The people working at the barbeque kept chasing the dog away.  Lori and Makenna took extra food from the barbeque and went to the beach to sit with the dog and share their dinner with him.  Makenna named him Biscuit after a dog in a story she had read.  The guide told them that “Biscuit” had lived at a big house on the beach with four other dogs.  The family living in the home had left for the season leaving the dogs to fend for themselves.  The abandoned dog was very thin and dehydrated.  The Mexican guides tried to reassure Lori that the dog was able to fend for himself and were not receptive to hearing that dogs need care provided by people.  Lori and Makenna tried to take Biscuit with them in the van when they left the beach but the driver would not allow it.  They were told that taking a dog out of the country was almost impossible.  They drove away looking back at Biscuit lying on the beach, his head resting on his paws watching them go.
Lucky for this beach dog, he would not be forgotten.  Once home, while reading a souvenir Cabo magazine Lori saw an ad created by HSCSL graphic design volunteer Wendy Rall with the slogan “It’s Easy To Adopt a Baja Beauty”.  She went to our website and immediately contacted volunteer Allison Webb.  Together they worked out a plan to find Biscuit.
Remembering that the nice tour guides Paulo and Juanito had cell phones Lori managed to get their numbers.  With some coaxing she was able to talk the guys into finding the dog and delivering him to Humane Society shelter.  Once Biscuit was safely in the shelter, Lori decided she would like to bring Biscuit to the states where she could find him a great home.  An escort was arranged for Biscuit to fly to Sacramento as soon as he had his vaccinations and a certificate of good health.  Sadly Biscuit was found to have heartworm.  The vet prescribed medication and three weeks of quiet time.  Biscuit, a dog accustomed to free run of the beach did not cooperate in the shelter confined to a run.  Allison took him home for foster care where he was content to be in her yard with her three dogs.  He settled down and recovered from his disease.
On May 21st Allison flew with Biscuit to Sacramento where he was greeted by tears of joy from the Whitney family.  His new life began with a PetCo shopping spree.  Good Day Sacramento was on hand to record the happy reunion for their viewers.  Biscuit has found his forever home thanks to The Whitney family that could not forget a dog in need of rescue.  Thank you Allison for opening your heart and home to Biscuit and working so hard to help him with his happy new beginning.

Dedicated Volunteer helps Sandy find the Perfect Home...

Our volunteer Maggie Mclean has a soft place in her heart for Golden retrievers and Labradors.  When she saw this lovely dog at the shelter she had to find it a wonderful home.  She knew that there was the perfect home for her with Caroline, a woman living in Laguna Hills, one hours drive from our shelter.  Maggie contacted Caroline and told her about the dog we called “Sandy”.    Caroline leads a busy life and was not able to come to the shelter quick enough to suit Maggie, our volunteer, who then resorted to a bit of nagging!  In the meantime “Sandy” had an interview with a family that had lost their Labrador to old age.  Her rowdy enthusiasm and lack of leash manners was too much for the family that had grown to expect dignity and a calm demeanor from their beloved dog, Tobe.  When this adoption opportunity failed, Maggie contacted Caroline again and kept calling until she agreed to come see “Sandy”.  As Maggie expected, Caroline was charmed by this joyful adult yellow lab. Read the letter from “Sandy” AKA “Maggie Bear” and enjoy the pictures and happy story of another shelter dog living the good life because of a dedicated volunteer that would not give up on her.

Hi Everyone!
This is my new home and friend Fajita.  We go to the beach and swim in the pool every day.  Mom takes me out alone every morning for a training lesson.  I think I am learning a lot.  I mess up inside some times because it is concrete.  Mom says I am supposed to do those things in the dirt outside now.  Just wanted let you know that I love it here.   My new friend, Fajita and I love my new Mom very much.  She holds me and kisses me good night.  I am so glad that you kept calling her to come and get me.  I owe you a lot.  The best I can do is send you pictures.  Know that I am happy and loved.  Oh yeah...Mom can't figure out what to call me so she just calls me "Maggie Bear" or just "Bear".
Whatever, I don't mind.  I am very happy.  Hasta Pastas
Love,
"Maggie"

Gracie (Asa) survived her first winter with no problems. She is now a well integrated member of our pack. It seems like she has always been here.
She loves to ride in the car. She and Cooper (lab/golden) won't let us leave the house without them. The older dog prefers to stay on the couch.   I truly believe she is a happy dog in our family.

Thank you for helping Gracie become a part of our family.
I'm not sure I can tell you exactly why, but she is a special dog.

Great News from Niles, Michigan:  Willie has a new name and a new family!

Willie was surrendered to the shelter because his family said that he was aggressive.  Margarita Partridge evaluated Willie upon his arrival as a dirty, matted and scared un-neutered male.  She found him to be fearful as is expected when a dog has not had kind treatment.  Her experience with animals concluded that Willie had the potential to be a good dog.  Willie was treated for zillions of fleas, given a short haircut to remove the mats, neutered and vaccinated.  Within a week he became a favorite of the volunteers when his sweet, playful personality emerged as he thrived in an atmosphere of care and affection.  Willie was chosen to accompany Jim and Jack to Michigan in March where he found his new family very quickly.

Heidi and Jim from Niles, Michigan visited the SPCA of Southwest Michigan shelter looking for a family companion.  Recently they sent the Humane Society this report of Willie renamed “Dudley”…..
We adopted Willie (now Dudley) five weeks ago from SPCA of Southwest Michigan.
He came along way to be apart of our family.   We live in Niles, Michigan. It's a lot colder here than in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.  It's ok though, because we bought Dudley a coat that he wears when we're outside and he looks quite
adorable in it. Dudley is such a joy to have.  I can't thank you enough for saving him.  He's
just what our family needed.   He has the best manners, loves to be petted and is so very good natured. ...Heidi

Our pleased volunteers want to thank Jack and Jim for another happy ending for one of our own!

MAYA LEAVES THE DESERT FOR A NEW FOREVER HOME.

In February Maya was chosen to accompany Jim and Jack to Michigan. Maya is a heavy coated Husky mix.The volunteers felt that Maya

would be happier in a colder climate. The temperatures were in the 40’s with snow on the ground when Maya arrived in Chicago. Jack and Jim enjoyed watching her roll in the snow and take pleasure in the cool temperature.

Maya was featured at the K-Wings hockey game when Maya was the "Pup of the Game." It was not long after her “debut” that she found her forever home.

The Story….

First off I want to thank you for everything that you do with the shelter in Cabo! We brought Maya into our home just two nights ago and she is adjusting just perfectly! I couldn't imagine a better dog! I was just randomly searching the SPCA's website about a week ago, just to look (or so I thought). I came across Maya's picture and her story. My boyfriend and I just couldn't resist!

Two days ago we picked her up from the shelter here in Kalamazoo, Michigan and brought her into our home! We have a black lab mix named Rosco. The two of them get along as if they have lived together their whole lives! And believe it or not, Maya has shown Rosco her alfa side. He is a pretty hyper fellow and as you know, Maya is so calm...so she wasn't quite sure when Rosco tried to run and jump with her at their first meeting.

Her first night with us, she hopped up onto our King size bed and didn't even want to get up for breakfast in the morning. Later on in the day, we took Rosco and Maya for a walk to a nearby park with green grass and ducks and geese swimming in the river. On the way there she was extremely interested in the birds (even ones on the telephone wires!) but the ducks and geese she didn't even mind! When it was bed time, yup, there was Maya on the king size bed snuggled right up next to us! And once again, she didn't want to get up for anything in the morning!

Today we went to my mom's house (only about 10 min. away) where there is 1/2 acre lot all fenced in. Let me tell you, Maya was in heaven! She and Rosco ran and jumped and played for several hours (coming in for breaks here and there of course

She is learning very quickly some of the tricks and commands that Rosco already has down. I'm sure that you have seen or heard about Ceasar Milan - The Dog Whisperer...we love watching his show and use a lot of his techniques for Rosco, and Maya is picking up on them also very quickly

Thanks again for all you do! Mandy, Eric, Rosco and Maya

PANCHO VILLA is a 1 and 1/2 yr old
gorgeous black short hair cat. He left Cabo in August 2005 with me,
off to Montana! We love him dearly and we thank you for him !
He'll tell you more. We both send our best to each of you.

Cabo's Story

In a small town by the name of Miraflores, there was a dog that nobody cared about. She lived at a Pemex gas station; One day her spirit captured the heart one family. She was so friendly and happy to see anyone willing to pet her, even though she was obviously mistreated. It looked like she had not eaten in days, she had no water even though the sun was blazing, and she was missing half of her fur due to mange. The family bought a can of dog food and gave her some water. On the trip back to their hotel they stopped to snap a picture of this dog that had an undying spirit. Right after the picture was taken there was a horrifying whine. A car had hit her as they were pulling out of the gas station. The attendants looked around in shock as she dragged herself under a nearby truck. The heartbroken family had no choice but to drive off.

Her picture could not escape from that family’s mind. They called the Cabo San Lucas Humane Society and after a series of phone conversations a decision was made. The next morning they would make the hour long drive back to rescue her. The little injured puppy was no where to be found. Finally, thanks to a young man, the family found her curled up under a pile of tires covered with a tarp. After spending an hour at the Humane Society it was determined she would live and the family would call her Cabo and take her home to Portland, Oregon. The family went back a couple days later to see how she was settling in. Although she was scared and in quarantine she already looked so much better, the Humane Society had already started to treat her mange.

Throughout her recovery the president of the Cabo Humane Society, Aida, kept the family up-to-date about Cabo. The family was so touched by the Human Society and their efforts that they shipped boxes of supplies down to them. Aida sent email after email to the family and even sent pictures to show them how well Cabo was looking. Finally on June 2, 2006 Cabo made an incredible journey. She flew 2,000 miles from Cabo San Lucas to Los Angeles and then to Portland, Oregon. Cabo, Lorna, and Aida were all smiles in the LAX airport. Once home Cabo spent the night in the room off the garage with Lexi. Then, she got to meet the rest of the family, she was happy to see Sierra and Lilly the family’s two yellow labs. Together they all played fetch and took a walk later in the day. Cabo’s loving spirit shined through even after everything, and she is a joy to have. She has made an incredible journey and it is finally she is safe and sound with her new family.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS AND FOREVER AFTER

Brittany came to our shelter in the spring of 2005. Our volunteers and shelter staff always knew that she was a very special dog. She was affectionate and intelligent with all the qualities needed to be a devoted companion. We wanted her to have a loving family that would appreciate her.

Six weeks ago Peggy Kallum from San Jose escorted Brittany to Chicago where she was met by Jack Frost from the Western Michigan chapter of the ASPCA. The ASPCA volunteers went to work looking for the perfect home for our Brittany.

All of us at the Humane Society de Cabo San Lucas received a wonderful holiday gift when Brittany’s new family sent this picture. Happy Holidays to Brittany in her new joyful forever home! Thanks again to our friends in Michigan that once again offered us their resources to find the perfect home for another lucky Cabo dog.

DANIELA GOES TO MICHIGAN (photo unavailable)

.....Imagine her surprise when this dog from the desert took her first step into the snow!
.Daniela surprised everyone when she jumped without hesitation into the lake after a ball.  Soon she was attending family parties and impressing everyone with her good manners.

When Daniela was brought to the shelter she became an immediate favorite because of her pretty soft fur and gentle, sweet personality.

Almost a year went by while she waited to be adopted.  The volunteers became concerned that her personality was changing from spending too much time indulging in rowdy behavior with her furry pals in the big dog play yard.  Feeling the need to put her into an atmosphere where her sweet personality would shine, Daniela was chosen to go to the Southwest Michigan SPCA where in the care of board member Jack Frost and Director Jim Di Loreto she would find a wonderful home.

Michelle Kaminski volunteers at the ASPCA of SWMI  shelter as a dog walker/socializer and often provides foster care for dogs that need special treatment.  She heard that Daniela had spent much of her life in a Mexican shelter so decided to take her home to enjoy life in a family setting.  It wasn’t long before Daniela advanced from a foster care dog to a new member of the family.

Michelle and her family along with her “brother” Handsome, another rescue dog are giving Daniela the life we could only dream about for her.  Thanks again to Jim and Jack for their generosity in offering their resources to Daniela.  We also thank Michelle for sending us these happy pictures and for giving Daniela more fun than she ever imagined.

Chicci
was found at the Cascadas beach and was fostered by Aida for two weeks. The day she went to the shelter Daniela and Sanet came in, and after spending some time at the shelter picked Chicci to go home with them. She is now a happy world traveler currently living in Germany and soon will be moving to Sweden.

KABO KANINE KONNECTION
by
Margarita Partridge

In early March Michigan animal activists Jim Di Loreto and Jack Frost were vacationing at their time-share condo at Playa Grande and became bored by Cabo`s perfect weather and pristine beaches so they decided to search out the HSCSL animal shelter which they had seen advertised in Los Cabos Guide magazine and get their “dog fix.” After visiting and playing with the HSCSL shelter`s adoptable lovelies they began to wonder how difficult it would be to take these adorable pets back to Michigan where Jim is director of the Southwest Michigan SPCA and Jack a SPCA board member in charge of Dog Intake and Adoption.(These two dynamic guys were responsable for placing over 1,000 dogs in 2005 alone.)

Consultation with HSCSL secretary-treasurer and adoption veteran Judith Ubaldi revealed that it was not as complicated as many assume. American Airlines informed them that they could take one carrier per passenger but made an exception and they were able to take 4 dogs in 3 crates. Dr. Cesar Tapia issued the health certificate for each dog and assured that their vaccination records were complete and up-to-date. (Contrary to popular belief, there is no quarantine period when traveling to the US or Canada.) They did discover, however, that animals must have been vaccinated at least one month prior to travel. Animal crates were located and Friday, March 3, Judith met Jim and Jack at the SJD airport with lucky pooches Poncho, Molly, Pelota and Jessie.

Jim and Jack report that the Kabo Kanines were perfect travelers throughout the journey to Chicago and did not even complain about the 45ª weather—Poncho, the white terrier mix which had been abandoned outside the shelter immediately won the heart of the receptionist in the SPCA vet`s office and was whisked away to foster care with intent to adopt,. Molly, the mini lassie type mama dog won the hearts of Jim and Jack and may never make it out of their backyard were she is trying to fit in with their other five dogs (an easy task for Molly, after rooming with 45 dogs at the HSCSLshelter.) Pelota is learning how to not slip on the ice and Jessie, the Jack Russell Terrier mix is expected to be placed quickly because of her wonderful affectionate nature.

In fact, the Jim and Jack`s adoption experience was so positive and problem- free that they arranged for their friends, Playa Grande timeshare owners Pat and Linda Healy to take four more HSCSL lovelies to Chicago a week later on their way back to New Haven, Connecticut. Jim and Jack plan to monitor the Kabo Kanines' progress after they are placed in permanent homes and will send reports of theirprogress to local media here in CSL with thegoal of encouraging more foreign visitors to adopt Cabo pets. The HSCSL and Cabo`s homeless animal population are extremely fortunate that these generous visitors were searching for a more meaningful vacation experience than sun, surf and sand. It is said that what makes a place interesting is its people—in this case one would have to
add—“and its four-legged residents.”Mil gracias Jim, Jack, Pat and Linda.

Stay tuned for updates of their new lives with families in the U.S.

“A homeless animal`s only sin is being unwanted.”

Cali was struggling to stay out of the way of the vehicles at the Cali Gas Plant outside of Cabo. She was very pregnant and fearful of everything. Margarita Partridge saw this pitiful stray and managed to scoop her up and put her on the seat next to her in her truck. Cali was first in line for the November free Spay & Neuter Clinic at CARE in San Jose. Once she became accustomed to the activity at the Cabo shelter she began to trust that people were going to be kind and in fact, life could be fun! Cabo Bello resident, Wells, was missing his Cabo dog that had recently died. He made a few visits to the shelter to find a new companion. After considering his many choices he chose Cali. As he put it…”this dog needs someone that will put the effort into her to make her feel special”. Cali is a lucky dog that went from having few prospects to a happy home with an extraordinary, thoughtful man.

Bunny joins Brady’s Beagle Brigade!
The Anderson family in San Diego has formed their own Beagle Brigade. Michele Anderson saw our Bunny on the San Diego Beagle Rescue site. Bunny was a lost dog brought to our shelter. Her picture was put up around Cabo and she appeared in the Gringo Gazette hoping that her family would come to the shelter and claim her.

After many weeks of waiting the decision was made to look for a new home for Bunny. She appeared on the Pet Finders web site and the San Diego Beagle Rescue site. Almost immediately Michele emailed the HSCSL with an interest in adopting Bunny. While waiting for someone flying from Cabo to San Diego that would escort Bunny, the Anderson family fell in love with a male Beagle on the same rescue site.

They adopted Benny and brought him home while waiting for Bunny to join their family. The big day came when our President, Aida Trujillo took Bunny with her on a business trip to San Diego. Eight year old Brady Anderson pictured here with his new Beagle buddies is enjoying his good fortune.

The family reports that Brady, Benny and Bunny get along marvelously. Bunny has a lovely personality with just the right balance of sweetness and affection. Bunny also has her mischievous side. She loves to sneak a glove or shoe and prance around the house with it. We fell in love with Bunny while in our shelter. We thank the Anderson family for giving her a very happy home.

Miss Mexi & Poncho Go To America!

I found the Cabo animal shelter on the web prior to my trip down in August 2005. After reading about all the programs and good work they do on a tiny budget I talked to my husband about adopting a kitten there at the end of our trip. I communicated with Judith Ubaldi about timing, vaccinations, etc.
As promised at the end of our annual trek to Baja my mother and I drove out to the shelter where we met Modesto, one of the dedicated volunteers. What a wonderful women, a joy to watch her interact with the animals. Although we were language challenged we asked her some questions, then settled in to just looking at all the animals.
Well, to make a long story short, it was an agonizing decision but we each chose a wonderful kitten. We were also grateful to Aida who was so generous with her time helping us all the while trying to do her other full time job! On the day of our departure we picked up our new babies and whisked them off to the airport.
My mother and her kitten, now named Poncho, were off to Montana to join his new siblings, Mercy and Jack. My little girl, christened Miss Mexi, would be going to San Francisco to meet her new brothers, Tom and Russell.
I must say we got so much attention in the Cabo airport I wish I had a Cabo Animal Shelter pamphlet or brochure to hand out. It would be a great marketing location. Many Americans were fascinated to learn about it and how easy it would be to bring an animal home.
On the airplane Miss Mexi had her first taste of hamburger and I don't think she has stopped eating since. The little happy chowhound has finally made peace with the other cats and our bed has very little open real estate at night.
She has a wonderful personality, making us laugh every day. I hope she grows a little more hair, coming from the heat of the Baja I think she is a little unprepared for cold air, however, she is excellent at burrowing under the covers and staying put all night - what she lacks in a fur coat she makes up for in intelligence!
I hear Poncho is thriving equally well, in fact, when I see my parents at Thanksgiving there will be 6 cats under one roof for a few days - oh my gosh!!!
Attached please find a couple of pictures -

Warm Regards to all at the shelter!! Kate Van Gytenbeek

Gringo
went to live with the Lepe family in Los Congrejos. At first the volunteers performing the home check prior to the adoption would not approve the home because in the lovely garden were pens of chickens and rabbits. The volunteers could picture Gringo, a lively dog, harassing these poor creatures. They recommended to the family that they choose a more docile dog. The family had their heart set on Gringo so a trial period was agreed upon. After a week of daily phone calls to the family and a home check the volunteers were amazed to find a calm, well behaved Gringo living in harmony with all of his new family members.

Tomas and volunteer Margarita Partridge became friends during her Sunday mornings that she devotes to tending to the comfort of the cats and kittens in catteries. She took Tomas home and introduced him to her family of 4 dogs and 2 cats. Tomas was always a tranquil cat but his composure was impressive when he met his new family. He easily held his ground when Margarita's two poodles thought they would give chase to the newcomer. Tomas was surrendered to the shelter because he was living with a man that worked all day and had no time for him. His days of neglect and boredom are history!

Mancha a lively and loveable puppy born in the shelter has gone to join the family of Lindsay, Luna and Chimo in Vista California. Lindsay rescued Muneca (aka Luna) from the streets of Cabo. Her story can be found by clicking on Muneca & Negrita on the home page. Chimo, Lindsay's 5 year old male rescue dog is buddies with Luna but has an energy level that is too much for his dignified friend. Manchas is a strong, rough and tumble puppy that will love to play with Chimo. Lindsay is confident that bringing Manchas into her family is going to bring balance. She and Luna can relax around the pool while Manchas and Chimo have fun playing in their spacious yard.

Princessa’s handsome male puppies Lalo and Manchas were adopted from the shelter in the summer of 2005.  Lalo went home with a nice local family with one small child and another on the way.  Manchas was taken to the states by Lindsay Townley of Cabo San Lucas and Vista, California.

Lalo’s family moved to a larger home when the baby arrived.  Lalo was left with a neighbor while they settled in.  Somewhere along the way the family forgot to return for Lalo.  The neighbortracked them down and returned their dog.  The new home did not have a fenced yard.  With two small children the family lacked the time to care for Lalo.  He was left to wander the busy streets.

In earlyApril of 2006 Lalo was returned to the shelter.  His family did what they thought was best for the neglected dog.  Lalo wasdespondent at the shelter.  He stopped eating and would not interact with anyone.  He spent his days watching the activity going on around him but would not participate.  As he grew thinner and more depressed each day the staff and volunteers knew he needed to be rescued and fast.  A volunteer thought of Lindsay and knew she would be concerned if she knew of Lalo's sad situation.  Hearing the story, Lindsay did not hesitate.  She would not let the brother of her beloved dog Manchas suffer another day.  She invited him to join her family as soon as an escort could be found to accompany him toSan Diego.  Janet and Roger Norbomwere headed to the states with their golden lab and a new puppy rescued in La Paz.  They instantly agreed to escort one more dog on their Alaska Airlines flight.

Lalo was a reluctant traveler.  He had no idea that he was headed to a large dog-friendly property where he would find acres of grass and a wilderness area perfect for long walks with his litter mate Manchas and Luna and Chimo, his new canine family.  He would also meet his new best friend, Lindsay, the woman that would enjoy helping him make a smooth transition into his wonderful new life.

Stay tuned for Lindsay’s report on Lalo’s adventure.  She has taken into her heart a dog that has withdrawn from life.  Lindsay has the experience and the commitment to go the distance.  Chimo and Luna were abandoned street dogs with no prospects.   Both were living in life threatening situations.  Under Lindsay’s care they have grown to be affectionate, confident, fun loving dogs that enjoy every day.

We know that Lalo has a brilliant future.

Update on Lalo, June 2006

LALO, now Deja, is doing GREAT! His coat is getting really shiny and all his bones are disappearing under a healthy layer of fat! As of Tuesday last week, he weighed in at 67 lbs. Manchas, who was a bit fat, had LOST four pounds (he weighed in at 74 lbs) so that's good! I think when Deja gets to around the 70-72lb mark he will be just perfect.

I think Deja has a little more concentration than his brother, Manchas. He has watched Chimo bring in the mail and now also collaborates with this task. He carries mail into the house too and drops it at the dog cookie jar for a treat. I never taught him this........he wanted to do it himself after watching Chimo. Smart! (I have been trying to teach Manchas to do this for months but he gets silly and loses concentration - drops the mail half way up the driveway then tries to grab what Chimo has.....he's just a big happy- go-lucky kind of dog and doesn't take things seriously.)

Deja and Manchas play all day and have the best time. Chimo is relieved to be getting a break and only joins in when he feels like it. There is no aggression amongst the pack members....... they all get along great. There have been no fights over food, toys or anything else.

(Well, Luna-Muneca guards her food bowl even when she isn't hungry and there's nothing in it.......but that's just La Diva Luna's way.)

I will keep you updated - just wanted to let you know all is well at Casa Alegre.
