Our Palapa style animal shelter was built entirely by donations. It is the fun part of animal rescue. Families have come from as far away as La Paz to find a suitable pet.  Many dogs and cats have found happy homes in the United Sates and Canada through our website and Petfinders.com
In 2005, 126 animals were adopted from the shelter. The Society attributes the steady increase in local adoptions to the high quality of the adoption animals and to the fact that all animals have been spayed or neutered and are current in their vaccinations.   The adoption fee is $500 Pesos.

The Society appreciates the locals and tourists that take it upon themselves to help an animal in need.Shelter policy directs that anyone wishing to surrender an animal must first call a board member for instructions. Shelter caretakers can refer callers to a board member for assistance.  The Society has no animal control trucks on call that can respond to immediate requests for help with animal rescue.

We do not send trucks out any time except on the scheduled Saturday of each month. The second Saturday of every month is Round-up Day.

On Round-up Day, volunteers are available to pick up unwanted animals and strays from 7 AM until 11 AM. Animals may also be brought directly to the shelter during that time. The number to call for pick up service or information is:

Spanish : cell # 044 (624) 151-6046. For English call 105-0064 during office hours and leave a message before the day of the Round-up.

Our Saturday Roundup crew consists of many faithful volunteers that have been helping the animals since the early days

The HSCSL can only receive animals from Cabo San Lucas and the surrounding colonias. Unfortunately, our limited resources cannot support service to the animals from the San Jose area.

The Society has a annual budget of just under $100,000 USD for shelter expenses. Each healthy dog accepted into the shelter has initial costs of $100 USD to vaccinate, spay/neuter and treat for internal and external parasites. This cost does not include the daily expenses of food, water, electricity, cleaning supplies or staff to mention a few.

Dogs and cats in need of special medical treatment to help them qualify for adoption can double this preliminary cost within days of their arrival. Anyone that rescues a dog that can sponsor the dog or cat by paying the processing expenses enables the Society to help another animal that arrives without a sponsor.

What many people don’t realize is that every expense incurred in helping the animals has to come from donations. The Society has no funding from the government or any other official source.

There is no government agency to come to the aid of the animal population. There is no state run facility or program to offer services to the animals living on the Baja peninsula.
